3G Development in China June 14-20

- Taiwan's government-sponsored III (Institute for Information Industry) announced on June 10 that the institute has entered into a collaboration agreement with Chinese telecom operator China Mobile through China Mobile Research Institute, with an aim to help Taiwanese mobile content and application service providers to tap the growing demand for Smartphones in China, Taiwan's Economic Daily reported on June 10. Pursuant to the agreement, they will collaborate in the development of next generation open-source mobile platforms and applications on those platforms, including applications for China Mobile's TD-SCDMA (Time Division-Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access) Smartphone, dubbed Ophone, which runs on OMS (Open Mobile System) platform developed by China Mobile based on Google's Android OS, according to the same source.

 

- Following the announcement made by China Mobile that the company would launch a batch of TD-SCDMA (Time Division-Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access) Smartphones and feature phones with a price tag between 500 RMB (US$73.5; US$1 = 6.8 RMB) and 1,000 RMB (US$147.1), China Unicom recently announced the launch of around 10 Smartphone models based on WCDMA (Wideband CDMA) technology with a price tag between 800 RMB (US$117.6) and 1,200 RMB (US$176.5), with an aim to expand its 3G user base, the Sohu IT News reported on June 17. These WCDMA Smartphones manufactured by Nokia, Sony Ericsson, ZTE, Huawei, and Tianyu will be available in the market starting next week, according to the same source. China Unicom stated that they will initiate subsidies for these Smartphones without specifying the amounts. Other than Smartphone priced between 800 RMB (US$117.6) and 1,200 RMB (US$ 176.5), China Unicom will also focus on the promotion of Smartphone priced between 1,200 RMB (US$176.5) and 1,600 RMB (US$235.3).
